Vancouver Island Yoga School

Deborah Carruthers

My yogic journey began 13 years ago at the age of 50. I was in the midst of my master’s degree and was looking for a thesis topic. My research on alternative treatments for anxiety and depression showed some promising results when patients practiced yoga and meditation. That prompted me to take a yoga teacher training when I completed my degree. In the first week of training in Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, I felt a dramatic shift in myself. A seed planted early on has grown into a thirteen-year process that has inspired me to travel to India and Miami to study with the great master teachers of Ashtanga Yoga. I honour Sharath and Saraswati Jois, Sharmila Desai, Rolf and Marcia Naujokat, Kino MacGregor, Tim Feldmann, and David Swenson for their profound teachings at each stage of my development.

I have 13 years of teaching experience in the Ashtanga method. As the director of Harmony Yoga and Wellness Center/ Vancouver Island Yoga School, I facilitated 200-hour and 300-hour yoga teacher training programs that gave students a successful career in teaching yoga.

In the last year, I have completed a level one Ayurveda course to enrich my offerings and service to the community. We are excited at VI Yoga School to offer a new 300-hour yoga teacher training that is rooted deeply in the lineage of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. This course will transform your personal practice and give you the knowledge and confidence to share the teachings of yoga.

Counseling and Wellness Practice

Deborah Carruthers BA, BSW, MA grew up in a single-parent home with a mother and siblings that needed support and guidance. She developed skills early in life that led her to find a vocation in helping people reach their goals and transform their lives. She became a single parent herself and while raising young children, she went back to school, first to upgrade and over the course of twenty years, earned three university degrees.

While earning her Master’s Degree, Deborah became interested in research that showed promising results for folks with depression and anxiety, when they practiced yoga. Upon completion of her degree, she took a yoga teacher training course that was life-enhancing and sent Deborah in the direction of a holistic approach to working with clients and students.  For booking or more information, please visit Harmony Yoga Evolution
