Chair yoga is an accessible class for anyone who would like to develop a gentle yoga practice. It is especially helpful for people living with chronic pain and illness (e.g. autoimmune or inflammatory diseases, arthritis, MS, fibromyalgia) or physical injuries/limitations.
A chair provides students with a safe foundation from which to explore the many benefits of yoga postures, breathing and mindfulness meditation. Chair yoga helps students to develop strength and flexibility within their present range of motion and ability. The goal of the class is to help students develop a positive relationship with their body and to reduce stress and anxiety.
Most postures will be performed in a seated position in the chair, with an optional ten minutes of standing poses for those who would like to work on balance and strength using the chair as a support. In addition to yoga postures, a typical class will include 10 minutes of breathing practice and mindfulness meditation seated in the chair. Savasana, the final pose and integration of the practice, is a guided relaxation that can be done seated in the chair or lying down on a yoga mat.
All students will be encouraged to find a safe expression of each pose and explore with an attitude of curiosity to find the place where strengthening and healing can be done. The teacher will help to suggest appropriate modifications or alternative poses for students at different levels of ability.
